Eligibility

All corn farmers are eligible to enter to the contest, but must be members of KCGA/NCGA. Your KCGA membership also includes membership in NCGA! Join here!

The Kansas Corn Yield Contest has joined with the National Corn Yield Contest (NCYC). Kansas growers who enter the NCYC are automatically entered in the Kansas Corn Yield Contest. For more information, contact Kylie Massengale, at 785-249-8723 or kmassengale@ksgrains.com.

NCYC/KCYC Entry and Deadline Information

  • Early entry: May 1 – June 30, 2023 $75 per online entry plus one-time affiliated State/NCGA membership fee (if applicable)
  • Final entry:  July 1 –  Aug. 16, 2023 $110 per online entry plus one-time affiliated State/NCGA membership fee (if applicable)
  • Harvest entry: Aug. 17 – Nov. 30, 2023
  • NCGA National Corn Yield Contest Winners will be announced Dec. 13, 2023
  • Kansas Corn Yield Contest Winners will be announced by Dec. 22, 2023.

The Kansas Corn Yield Contest will award a dryland and irrigated winner in each of the districts. The districts align with crop reporting districts, plus a NNE district that includes Doniphan and parts of Brown and Atchison counties (fields north and/or east of Hwy 73). One statewide dryland and one statewide irrigated winner will be announced. Cash prizes will be awarded at the district and state levels.

PRIZES

  • Overall State Winners for dryland and irrigated categories will receive a $500 cash prize and a plaque.
  • First Place District Winners of dryland and irrigated categories will receive a $300 cash prize and a plaque.
  • Second Place District Winners of dryland and irrigated categories will receive a $200 cash prize
  • Third Place District Winners of dryland and irrigated categories will receive a $100 cash prize.

Kansas Corn Yield Contest winners will be recognized at the Kansas Corn Symposium held in January 2024.

NEW NCYC Nitrogen Management Class

Corn Yield Contest Nitrogen Management pilot class will be open to the first 100 entries from the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin. Farmers in the pilot class will limit total nitrogen applications from non-field sources to 180 lbs. of actual nitrogen applied. The three highest-yielding entries in the class will be declared preliminary winners and confirmed as class winners after an NCGA verification of actual nitrogen applied. The goals of the Kansas Corn Yield Contest are to:

RECOGNIZE

Recognize and celebrate the success of high-yielding corn farmers across the state of Kansas.

IMPROVE

Improve farming operations and increase awareness and implementation of the best management practices (BMPs) to improve and sustain corn yields.

SHARE

Share data collected with other farmers to benchmark cornfields and provide information to increase profitability.

2021 Kansas Corn Yield Contest Winners

Jan. 27, 2022–Eight of the 35 winning entries surpassed the 300 bu./acre mark in the 2021 Kansas Corn Yield Contest was highly competitive throughout the state. Josh Koehn of Gray County had the top yield in the state contest with an irrigated yield of 330 bushels per acre in the 2021 Kansas Corn Yield Contest is sponsored by Kansas Corn and K-State Research and Extension. This is the first year for the combined registration of the state-level yield contest and National Corn Yield Contest, bringing greater competition and entries.
Top yield contest entries for the Kansas contest came from Jeff Koelzer of Pottawatomie County in the dryland division with a yield of 320.1 bushels per acre; and Josh Koehn of Gray County in the irrigated division with a yield of 330.28 bushels per acre.
The contest awarded dryland and irrigated winners in ten districts, along with one statewide dryland and one statewide irrigated winner. The winners were recognized at the Kansas Corn Symposium on Jan. 27 in Salina, Kansas.
The Kansas Corn Yield Contest was created to recognize high-yielding Kansas corn farmers and gain information to improve practices and increase efficiency for greater sustainability and profitability. Sharing the data collected among Kansas farmers benchmarks the corn yields and provides information for improving management practices.
