August Estimates Show Good KS Corn Crop

The August Crop Production Estimate from USDA/NASS was just released. Kansas is estimated to produce 570 million bushels of corn. This is up slightly from 566 million bushels produced in 2014. Yield is estimated at 152 bushels per acre, compared to 149 in 2014.

Kansas is one of only five major corn producing states to see an increase in production over last year. Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and North Dakota all are estimated to have an increase in production over 2014.

US corn production is forecast at 13.7 billion bushels, down 4 percent from last year’s record production. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 168.8 bushels per acre, down 2.2 bushels from 2014. If realized, this will be the second highest yield and third largest production on record for the United States. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 81.1 million acres, unchanged from the June forecast but down 2 percent from 2014.

This is the first production estimate of the year.

Kansas sorghum is estimated at 229 million bushels, compared to 200 million bushels last year. Yield is estimated at 79 bu. per acre, compared to 74 bu per acre in 2014.

Kansas soybeans is estimated at 133 million bushels, compared to 143 million bushels in 2014. Yield is estimated at 37 bushels per acre, compared to 36 bushels per acre last year.
