ARC or PLC? In 2019, procrastination will pay off, trust me!

Kansas Corn was proud to be a premier sponsor of the K-State Research and Extension 2018 Farm Bill informational meetings (2018 refers to the Farm Bill name). Final attendance numbers are still pending, but the last number I heard was more than 1,500 attendees from across the state. As you may have heard, the signup period for the commodity title programs, Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) is now open. However, the deadline for the 2019 crop year is March 15, 2020. Therefore, you will be able to decide between the two programs based on actual production data for your farm, hence you will know what program will produce the largest payment. The signup period for the 2020 crop year ends June 30, 2020, so you will not have the opportunity to utilize actual 2020 production data. For simplicity, many producers may choose to sign up for 2019 and 2020 crop years at the same time next winter to save a trip to the FSA office.

K-State’s, extension associate, Robin Reid, had the best advice for producers when she recommended that they put off this decision until sometime this winter when there is a downtime and they have certified production numbers in hand. There are other options to consider at that time including updating or dropping yields. We will write more on these options later this fall/winter when I have access to some real world 2019 production numbers to utilize.

Disaster aid available

Congress recently approved disaster aid funding for those negatively impacted by flood, including stored grain losses. If you were impacted by flooding this spring requiring land reclamation or damage to stored grain the best first step to take is to inquire at your county FSA/NRCS office.

If you are hearing something you feel is inconsistent please reach out to us, our staff are in regular contact with both state and national FSA and NRCS directors.
