Change the Units for Repeat Readers

There are no limits to the number of times librarians can request materials. This allows you to use the library series every year. Check out some ways you can make the units different for repeat readers who come back to participate in the “We Grow Corn!” Library Series. Let’s keep your readers learning about corn!

Make the units different:

  • Have the reader guess how the tasty snack is connected to the unit.
  • Select a “fun fact” from the “We Grow Corn!” book and find other books to help readers learn more about the topic.
  • Explore our FLEX Lessons to find fun activities that use easy to find materials.  Some of these lessons were recommended in your guide but you can find additional activities in our Lesson Library.
  • Online breakout boxes are a fun way to challenge your readers.  Just like a game, your readers use the clues to figure out how to “breakout” of the box. These can be done as a group or individually.  There are more breakout boxes available besides the ones listed in your guide.  We recommended that you stick with challenges for grade level K-4 found in our lesson library.
  • After students complete the activity in Unit 1, give them a piece of paper.  On that paper have the readers draw additional pictures of what the corn plant would look like between each of the stages in their craft project.
  • While your readers play with Oobleck, have them think of how cornstarch can be used when cooking.  It is a thickening ingredient so gravy should be the most common answer.  What other creative ways can cornstarch be used?
  • For Unit 6, instead of giving students the ability to pick what they want to make, work as a team to make one big 3D farm. Assign each reader something to make like a tractor, combine, barn, etc.  Younger readers can make the corn fields, animals, etc.
